Visualizing Story @ CCA

For the past couple of years I’ve led a course at CCA called Story. It’s a fun and challenging class; the participants are mostly undergrad sophomores in the Interaction Design program. In our semester together we explore story from a whole bunch of different directions…foundations, structures, formats (comics! pop-up books!) all culminating in a series of projects focusing on story for digital products.
In Spring 2020 we had to grapple with the pandemic and moving to all-online learning. The cohort was amazing…they were flexible and optimistic and created thoughtful and beautiful work.
The last project was a recap of the whole semester. We created a series of posters focusing on key elements of story in the context of interaction design. You can view the entire gallery on Medium.
To frame the project, I got to create a summary visual…an index of the topics they communicated in their work. Here’s the resulting poster.

These designers are storytellers, inventors, artists and makers. This is a group of folks to keep track of as they hone their skills and join the design practice.
