ArborApril 23: Lean on Me

Nature journal sketch of three windbent trees at Albany Bulb, CA.

[23] Today’s prompt is Lean on Me.
How does wind affect trees? Find a windy area and journal the lean of the trees.

Living on a coast is a great place to find windbent trees. And the Albany Bulb has a magnificent selection. I love how the crowns angle away from the wind, how they make a compass pointing North East, how they crest over like waves thundering down to shore. The more I look, the more arcs and arches I see. Next time you meet a windbent tree, take your time and really LOOK. Mysteries will begin to appear.

I think this sketch got complicated, but I really wanted to show both the scene and the space. From the low path you can see all three trees at once, and they make an interesting triad of forms. I really love these three trees. They are so dramatic.

Featured trees: unknown, but they look like waves cresting.
