Nature Journaling @ Tumamoc Hill, Tucson

December 22nd…a grand day to wander and wonder with the Tucson nature journalers. Despite living in Tucson for many years, I’d never been to Tumamoc Hill. And boy, what a treat!

With our guide, Roseann Hanson, we walked to the mid-way point and got a tour of the Desert Laboratory. The old buildings are constructed out of the volcanic rock, similar to many of the older buildings on the University of Arizona campus. The view was spectacular, and there were many amazing things to sketch.

I like to start with an overview of the space…where are we, what’s the weather, who am I with and what is here.
Diving deep into observation of a mesquite tree.
Tis the season, and this bright and colorful fruiting christmas cactus was on point!
Epic views demand writing.
The shapes! So stately yet goofy. Love these.
Right before exiting the trail, a sudden roadrunner appeared! Wish I’d had more time to capture the quirky movement and the body proportion. So much energy!

I’m eager to return in a different season to see what new wonders unfold in the wildly sketchable Sonoran desert.
